A Saturday exhortation!!!

“Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” ‭‭(Deuteronomy‬ ‭30:19b-20‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

A worthy objective for training the heart and the mind…

To join the psalmist in this exclamation:

“for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love. I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes.” ‭‭(Psalms‬ ‭119:47-48‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

The discipline of sitting and reading God’s love letter to us forms our mind.

We may not get it at first, but like the waves gradually change a coast line, His word gradually changes us. Sit and read and you will grow to find delight in His word. This is one fruit of the discipline of reading.

sitting and walking together as an important means to disciple making

In a very helpful teaching last Sunday, Geoffrey Maurer used Colossians and Hebrews to urge us on to disciple making. You could invest 34 minutes and listen HERE.

In this sermon we’re challenged to consider how we are able to be faithful in walking with fellow disciples.

With whom are you sitting?

With whom are you walking as fellow disciples of Jesus?

Remember, He FINISHED his work so you can move forward.

When you feel shame, look to Him. When someone puts shame on you, look to Him!

We are all a mess. That’s why he came! Don’t live any longer in shame or guilt or bitterness, look to the finished work of Jesus! Consider Isaiah’s words…

“…he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.” ‭‭(Isaiah‬ ‭53:12‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

He paid for sin. Confess, repent, forgive, move forward!

Don’t dwell in bitterness and contempt.

God doesn’t.

As his disciple, you must not either.

He paid for sin. Confess, repent, forgive, move forward!

Is there a fellow disciple that needs your patience and guidance as we follow the Master together?

Young Nimrod proved to his dad and me that, he too, could contribute to getting Tom bacsi to the airport.

Paul said: “We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” (‭‭Romans‬ ‭15:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬)

To apply teachings of Ignatius of Antioch and Dr. Curt Thompson: God knows how it feels to work with, and wait for younger, weaker disciples.

Are we, as we walk with fellow disciples in following Jesus, giving them enough patience? Time? Love?

Questions about our fruit as disciples

Sweet Anna’s persimmon trees have been fruitful this year. Last fall we dug around the roots, manured and mulched. The harvest is plentiful.

Jesus said “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. John 15:8-9

Jesus looked for fruit in the lives of his disciples. He was a master teacher using questions and debriefing to evaluate and foster their growth.

Scripture gives us lots of material that provide us with a basis to evaluate our personal spiritual development as disciples. Here’s the first:

Based on the text above, what are the good fruit in my life from which God receives glory?

How intentional am I about abiding in His love?

More to come…
