When a nation is wounded by being denied to self respect, it characteristically internalizes that denial. It comes to believe that it is not worthy of self respect. Its members come to Lowe’s themselves-on account of being black, on a count of being Native American, on account of being Arab. In that case, what is first of all necessary is that there be leaders who overcome self loathing.
