Thanksgiving 2011

This Thanksgiving holiday is being celebrated in Budapest. This is our second Thanksgiving abroad. Back in about ’03 we had Thanksgiving over here with friends.

This morning there was an errand to run so I left with Joanna who was headed to teach at her university. Out on the street, it is just another Thursday. Since Thanksgiving is an American holiday it has no bearing on the local people here in Budapest.

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful. Practicing gratitude is something I try to do regularly. I try to be thankful for my beating heart, for my breathing lungs, the ability to do what I do, the freedom to do what I do… I am thankful for my wife. It is on my trips and when she arrives to be with us during special gatherings that I am especially thankful for my Sweet Anna. I am also thankful for my daughters. I am so proud of them. They are amazing women. This year I am thankful for the first time for my son-in-law Will.

I am thankful for my everlasting life.

I try to cultivate gratitude in my life. I urge you to do the same.

Osijek, Croatia

This city will now be a regular part of my travels. As such, the last couple of days I’ve been out to figure out the city, what’s where and how the public transport works. Today I took some pix.

waitin for a tram

a YUGO - actually sold these in the US in the 70s or 80s

part of the local university, used to be Army base, war damage is gone

you have to look for it now, but war ruins are still around

they call it a city of parks

secessionist architecture prevails in the city center

back near the school we are partnering with, a focal point is the former synagogue

classrooms, offices and the library are in the new building

and rooms for visiting professors, this is where I've been for a few days

We’re excited about the new partnership with the Evangelical Theological Seminary and our newest folks, the Walkers who are getting settled in here in Osijek.

I’m back to Budapest tomorrow!

is your cup bitter or sweet????

I am reminded as I engage in a few conversations, that God gives each one a different cup. The other day, sitting in a wonderful, smoke filled Croatian cafe drinking coffee, I read Keller’s thoughts on this in King’s Cross where he noted that Jesus, when he faced THE cup, responded in this way “I (Jesus) trust you (the Father) no matter what I’m feeling right now. I know that your desires are ultimately my desires. Do what we both know must be done.”
What is your cup like right now?  consider Chamber’s words carefully HERE…
