My Favorite Psalm

You know, when you accidentally hit post when you meant draft? Yeah. That just happened.

So here it is without comment until later.

Psalms 19:1-14 ESV

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord , my rock and my redeemer.

with whom are you meeting to consider your own growth?

Jesus said to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

I have previously suggested 4 questions to ask oneself to keep tabs on how we might be doing with that.

It was once said, you can’t see you own face. We need trusted people to speak with to consider our own spiritual (and every other kind of ) growth.

Some call it having a mentor, a coach, a discipler… the point is to have a person to be honest with.

Hopefully, with some regularity.

So, with whom are you meeting to consider your own growth?

research on prayer

For years I have understood and taught about the imperative of prayer in relationships. Recently published results from some FSU (I know… right?) research gives evidence of such…

“Praying for a romantic partner or close friend can lead to more cooperative and forgiving behavior toward the partner, according to a new study co-authored by a Florida State University researcher.”

From CT website:  Editor’s note, added May 8, 2013: Dallas Willard died today at age 77, days after being diagnosed with cancer.

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2006/september/27.45.html

There will be lots of tributes to Willard.

But the best tribute of all is when you read his work that can help you be and make disciples to obey his Lord.

as easy as learning to ride a bike

Do you remember trying to ride a bike as a kid for the first time? I do. I think it must have been my much older brother who was helping me ride, keeping me up, getting up speed, then he let go.

Crash.

Back up, do it again.

Then, it happened, after many attempts and failures, balance was achieved and I was riding my bike!

It took practice, it took continuing to try and it took a steady hand holding me up while I learned.

Learning to “abide”, or getting to balance are kinda like that. We need help with that too.

Among others, three books helped me get started on the journey of learning to abide and seek balance.

Dan Allender wrote a really helpful book called Sabbath and earlier there was Emotionally Healthy Spiritually by Peter(?) Scazzero and between them was Paul Miller who wrote The Praying Life.

These three books helped me understand how to move beyond the typical American evangelical Christian rat race. I define such as believe correctly like us and get busy and do this other thing because doing is how you show whose you are.

I discovered how to abide in Christ. (There were others who prepared me, but that would take a while to sort out and I’m not willing to chase that rabbit for this post.)

But from all I have learned along the way, I know that for me to “abide” means going to a time and place of solitude and silence with God in his word DAILY. It really is that simple for me.

Would it be different for you? Really? Why? How do you know?

For to fail to drink deeply of God and be filled by Him before trying to pour out in service will surely result in my work instead of his fruit.

I point to Mueller and Spurgeon as models. They, in their own words, tell us that to step into the world in service while being void of God’s filling is a mistake. Spurgeon said he would not have conversation with man before having conversation with God. Mueller gave example of how his reaction to people was bad when he had not visited with God. I sure get that.

Jesus modeled getting into solitary places and then invited us in with him when he said “abide”.

I guess it’s just too simple to believe. It really is about sitting with Him. Alone, you and him. Read, pray (silent and/or out loud), journal, be quiet, listen, wait. He doesn’t have to tell you anything, just be with Him. You will wobble and crash. Just get back on the bike tomorrow. It will come. You’ll gain balance, you’ll ride. Then you will see how He is slowly changing you as you sit with Him.

But, if you won’t sit in the light, don’t complain about being in the dark.

There is more to be said… but I leave it here for now.

update from a comment

The bulk of this post originated from a comment that I wrote as a reply to a comment that I KNEW was coming,  and had been waiting for.

That comment was removed not because it had inappropriate content but because it contained a name that is not part of this greater conversation and would distract from said greater conversation (indeed a name might let the rest of us off the hook… we might think… oh, this is about HER… NO, it’s about all of us!).

On Tuesday I wrote to encourage a friend and those who honor him.

Beginning Wednesday I was moved to write about some leadership issues that I see everywhere I go (the railroad is in Hungary by the way). I am not thinking about any one leader or organization. These observations are not pointed to one spot. Indeed they are intended for all my readers who, on most days, the majority of whom are not even in the US.

As I visit and pray for many leaders in many countries and seek to encourage and help them, their hearts and stories are being used by the Spirit to help me write these challenges to affect a greater readership.

While some readers may feel (or hope) I am targeting a single place, please believe me, I am not. There are many schools and churches and organizations that have given this old brain pause and thought.

Having said all that, if the shoe fits, wear it. I sure do. And I am praying about what are the many ways that God needs to change me. We are all in need of self evaluation. Go consider the words of Paul in 1 Cor 11.  My hope is not to effect change or change minds (let alone hearts)… that’s God’s job.

But, if I can make you think and ponder and then abide in Him, I have done my job.
