snarkiness on the web

“A strange phenomenon has occurred with the evolution of social networking and the overall interweb world. A lack of civility, patience, gentleness, and kindness too often prevails. I must begin here by admitting that I have too often jumped into the pool of cynicism and snarkiness myself. I hate it in others and I despise it in myself. For some reason we get really bold when just facing a monitor and keyboard. Our rule for the internet should be never to say/post anything that we wouldn’t do so in the face-to-face presence of Jesus and the person to whom we are referring to.” – Brad Brisco

I don’t know who Brisco is, and don’t think its too important. I got the link via a Tweet to a blog where this paragraph was in the middle of a deal about this writer and a pastor named Driscoll, in this context, he also is not important. Who these guys are, and what one guy is arguing against the other guy about is not important… to me (but you can read the whole post HERE).

What IS important to me, very important, is what this writer says in the paragraph I’ve quoted. It’s about tone and tenor, its about civility (as we read from Dr. Wilsey yesterday (CLICK HERE).

This paragraph needs to be contemplated by all of us who think out loud on the web.

please reflect again…

the worst week in US history?

In an excellent post by my friend John Wilsey, the idea of a divided America is put in political and historical context… thinking back to the week MLK was killed (see my next post) and its context and referring to another article that makes the case for the assertion that, in ’68, this was the worst week in US history, Wilsey says, in the heart of his argument…

“In our contemporary political environment, we can make a choice about how we are going to behave ourselves. We can adopt a warfare mentality and draw lines in the sand and consider our political opponents to be the enemy. Or, we can compromise our values and our convictions, give in, surrender to our political opponents for the sake of just getting along.

Are those the only two options? Need we bifurcate on the issue of civility? I think not. I think it is possible to maintain your convictions and not be divisive at the same time.”

READ MORE from John Wilsey.

I think we all (Americans and my dear friends in Hungary too) need to think deeply behind the heart of Dr. Wilsey’s words.

MLK

was killed on this day in 1968…

the day before, he had said this…

“We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop…And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.”

insecurities

Everyone has insecurities. Being aware of our insecurities is the first step toward working through them. It is when we are able to gain our security from outside ourselves that we gain true security.

Indeed, being rescued from our insecurities is only truly possible through Love. I think That’s what this week is all about. He came to die so that we could truly place our trust in him and then he, Jesus could be our security, our strong tower.
