QUESTION: Can there be “community” without dedicated accountability and submitted hearts? or Is this just a buzz word for people to hang out with and pat me on the back? Has the new movement toward “community”, many of my younger friends talk about desiring, missed the boat of discipleship just like their elders did? Community in the Church should mean discipleship.

“community” is a buzzword, as is “accountability” and “discipleship.” I don’t know what those words actually mean anymore.

I agree that community in the church should mean discipleship but what does that mean? What does that look like? To some, it means joining a church-sponsored program. To others it means allowing someone into your everyday life and interactions and who has time for that?

We want “community” because we know we “ought” to yet… it takes work and time and that is something that we don’t want to commit to. So we call community hanging out and going to dinner after church.

    Sad but true.

    • Thanks for these thoughts Tory, I’m glad you have identified the need to define these terms afresh… just as CSLewis identified that the word Christian has changed in its meaning, we need to define the terms indeed…
