some great verses to start the year

But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind, . . . I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
“Father, I desire that they . . . whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me.”—I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.—He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.—Let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus.
Phil. 3:13, 14; John 17:24; 2 Tim. 1:12; Phil. 1:6; 1 Cor. 9:24, 25; Heb. 12:1, 2 (Read full verses…)

these come from Bagster’s daily reading…

a new day

my friend Arden posted about a clean out day and the New Year… it reminded me of a quote by Goethe I read last night in the bulletin of a wedding some of our family attended…

“Nothing is worth more that this day” – now, I’m sure some would read that and surmise that that quote meant yesterday, the wedding day of this great couple… but not me

I think that quote means today.

I don’t mean the day I am writing this, I mean the day — the moment — you are reading this…

serving Him means serving Him , where we are now! living for Him in this moment…

and if not, may we be thankful nonetheless!

lighting the way through the shadowlands

sometimes we experience darker shadows than usual…
in my experience, it is because we have stepped away from the light…
but this life is a life of navigating the shadows…
moving through the shadows toward the Real life, there, with Him…
for in His presence, there are no shadows…
just His perfect light…
here, there are shadows through which we must navigate using the light he has given us…
that light comes from the Word of God…
this is, i think, why the psalmist says “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet”…
it is good to have the Word…
it is better to read and dwell in the Word…
it is refreshing to come to drink deeply of the Word and find such great refreshment…
it is strength when we are weak…
water when thirsty…
food when hungry…
through it the presence of the living God speaks comfort to those who are lonely…
so, realizing this… why do we fail to go to the Word?
why indeed…

some of my favorite texts can be read by clicking and going back to click the next in a post called “signposts…” for the purposes of this post, I should call it streetlamps… because I often use these texts when I am feeling the darkness of the “shadowlands” pressing around me… these signposts, these lamps show me the way… thank you God for your word which soothes my soul.

"The Good Shepherd"

Last Friday a friend called and wanted me to go with some others to see a movie… we were headed to see some movie, which I can’t remember, but when we got there the managers had both quit and there would be no ten o’clock show… that was weird… so we went downtown and saw “The Good Shepherd” I found it to be intriguing… the back and forth of time, getting into the heads of spies and spy-masters… even though fictional, it was a very interesting look at the “founding” of the CIA. Be warned, it is loooong, and requires a lot more thinking than a bond flick. OH, I rented “From Russia with Love”… that one never gets old…
