sadness in DC

while at Stbks grading papers, I observed two things that brought me great sadness about the state of man… the first was a homeless man searching the trash cans all along the street… he would find a container of milk partially emptied and finish it, and another reach into the can he found half of a coke, he took this find and moved to search the next can… the second event involved another man who was being searched and when the police found something in his pockets, he was hand-cuffed… what sadness I saw through the window… what sadness I felt for us… even so, come Lord Jesus… more later from the American capital.

justice

I’m in DC today and tomorrow attending a conference that has early childhood development in the developing world as its topic… it is my hope to learn more about how God’s children need help, how that help is being given, how the givers of that help express that need, and perhaps make a few friends and try to show them Jesus along the way…

to lower my carbon footprint and reduce car related stress, I left the Volvo in the ‘ville and took the train… in the dining car I read some Scripture and was told to be humble… living humbly, now that’s hard, but I’m gonna try to show Him that way… more later

tragic, sad and just silly

There are a couple things that I need to get off my chest. First, the tragic happenings in India are so, so sad… These atrocities point to a greater injustice across the planet that make me so sad… We now have some limited digital TV capability at the house now and I get to watch more news from different countries and the South African news channel tells the sad, unjust tale that is Africa daily… Then there is the whole Black Friday atrocities on Long Island and in San Diego… What is wrong with these stupid people??????????? TO trample a Wal-Mart worker because of sale prices? and to shoot some one in a Toys-R-Us????? Icontend that 5th Avenue and the network news bear a heavy responsibility for these deaths… they (5th Ave advertising giants who teach people to want, want, buy, buy) and the news media who have created such a culture of fear about the economy which worsens an already bad situation and the our gun laws… ok, now I’m really ranting… sorry… So, on the way to post this rant, I saw two posts at CNN … the first is that Geo. W. Bush says that some people voted for Obama because of him (Bush)… Really? YA THINK???? Good grief, can you state the obvious? AND THEN the just silly… click here …SO we should tie up resourses at the justice department at this time in history when we are taking on recordnational debt to bail out gredy Wall Street bankers and people are trampling workers in store to save 40% on a TV? to devise a college foot ball playoff??????? no, sorry, that’s not silly, its stupid.

What a world we live in… What a mess…

Advent, looking forward to the return of the Lord Jesus…

Please come quickly Lord.

being reminded, being thankful

A couple of Lewis quotes from Mere Christianity that lend us to thankfulness…

“As Dr Johnson said, ‘People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.’ The real job of every moral teacher is to keep on bringing us back, time after time, to the old simple principles…” (Mere III.3.1)

“We have to be continually reminded of what we believe. Neither this belief nor any other will automatically remain alive in the mind. It must be fed…” (Mere IV.2.4)

Being reminded is important. A student must be reminded of his/her assignments. Children and husbands must be reminded of their chores. At Thanksgiving, we should remind ourselves of the blessings we have been given. We often live in cultures of griping and complaining. Certainly the current economic crisis (it is NOT a downturn) is bringing great hardship to families worldwide… But there is still the godly inclination to help and to give… as a farm in Colorado did… thousands turned up to glean the fields (click here for the full story)… so we need to be reminded to be thankful for what we have. Be reminded to be willing to give what we can… and reminded to help where we are able, where ever we are.18041392_240x180Happy Thanksgiving

[(Mere III.3.1) means book three, chapter 3 and paragraph one – this is a system I devised to use with students as they have varying editions of the book in class and thus the page numbers are not uniform, this way we can find and discuss a given quote…]
