I was listening to the news in the car yesterday and posted my thoughts about the economic storm we are in… Sweet Anna and I were on our way down to L’burg… while there, it began to snow… it was not really supposed to snow… flurries, yes, but not snow… as I waited while some shopping occured, I noticed that the snow was sticking to cold surfaces… when the shopping was over, we headed back to the ‘ville… as we drove up the highway, I would slow down and approach bridges with great caution (‘cuz bridges freeze first, and if there is snow on the road, watch out) ‘cuz I believe in being prepared… over the course of the trip home, where we drove through this light snow for 2/3 of the trip, we saw 11 accidents, most of which were at the beginning or end of a bridge… people were caught off guard by the slippery nature of the bridge… needless to say, it took us a lot longer to travel from the ‘burg to the ‘ville yesterday… this era that we live in is one which should remind us to be aware of what is going on around us, to be cautious of the bridges in life to appraoch them and leave them using wisdom… “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity” (Proverbs 2:6-7, ESV)

feels like a storm
The recession is now official. It now enters into most convrations. In conversations in the this week, I have heard an attitude of hunkering down. Folks in their twenties and forties are looking around at this growing storm and going inside to wait it out. Plans are put on hold, expenses are being limited, people are waiting, waiting for the storm to be over…

the brain
I just heard an amazing talk (given by a Harvard prof) on the developing brain. I learned a great deal about how stress affects the brain’s development and even why we learn the way we do. One thought continued to come to mind during this talk… early childhood development (this conference’s topic) depends on families and communities… depends… families… NOT dvds or computer games… families. “Train up a child…” is a foundational biblical concept that precedes the scientic and socialogical data… the scientific data continues to point us to the truths of life contained in Scripture… but we can find great motivating information as we learn widely and see through our learning how universally God’s truths apply to every field of knowledge…
So families… rearing children… in as stress free a context as is possible is the core scientific message… how? Well, I keep thinking of the Peace that comes from Grace… of the Peace that comes because of reconcilliation between people which comes to fruition as peace comes between humans and God… what we need is peace, Peace from Grace!
