calling

thought about it lately?

what is it?

how does one understand it?

when one identifies their calling, what if they sit still outside of the calling?

can one find personal fulfilment outside of calling?

can one be as effective outside of their calling?

what does one’s gifting and one’s talents have to do with calling?

let’s hear some thoughts…

  1. My Dad always asks me the question …
“How do you determine your calling?”

He’s holding the answer, I know he is!
I’ve always “drank the Baptist Kool-aid” and thought that it was based off of your talents and abilities – better yet your “spiritual gifts test!” As I grow older though, I realize that I grow and adapt in different ways and to different callings. Can one person be called to a life of full-time ministry and that’s all they ever do? Absolutely. But more often then not it’s many different stepping stones leading to the next portion – the next calling. God didn’t give us just one talent, why settle?

In God’s will is our peace.

I’m also a big fan of Frederick Buechner (Presbyterian minister who devoted his life to writing novels and other books of deep spiritual wisdom). On vocation he writes, “The place God calls you to, is the place where your deepest gladness and the world’s deepest hunger meet.”

May the words of your mouth and the meditations of your heart be pleasing to our Rock and our Redeemer.

As you well know, my entire world has been turned upside down by God in the past 4+ years. So, today, my comment on calling is this: I believe finding your identity in Jesus alone opens the floodgates for Him to pour Himself into you, show you who you REALLY are in Him, and release ALL that He has in and through you right where you are into the lives of the people right where you are, that they can find their identities in Jesus alone as well, etc……. I know, a very, very non-tangible answer…. hey, that’s where I’m at with Him.

  4. Ahhhhh, the masterful Oz Guinness once said, “Calling is the truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that everything we are, everything we do, everything we have is invested with special devotion and dynamism, lived out as a response to his summons and service.” Paul put it this way in 1 Corinthians 12:6 “There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.” (NIV) A “Call” is within what He has given us but it must not be seen as proprietary or for our own welfare as much as it is His and similar in all!
