Christian Humanism: point 3

Point three: Live in hope.

This is not a call for optimism, but it is a rejection of pessimism. The Christian Humanist affirms human potential as the image-bearer of God who has rationality. While recognizing the inherent fallen-ness of man [my clarification], he or she will not live in subservience to evil or totalitarianism (the speaker was active in the anti-apartheid movement).

A colleague who is a classicist has provided the desired translation and information from the tablet pictured below:

IMP(ERATORI) CAESARI
TIT(O)? AELIO
HADRIANO
ANTOINO?
AUG(USTO), PIO, P(ATER) P(ATRIAE)
CO(N)S(UL) III
LEG(IONI) II ADI(UTOR) P(RAEFECTUS) E(QUITUM)

“For the Emperor Caesar
Titus? Aelius
Hadrian
Antoninus?
Augusutus Pius, Father of the Fatherland
In the year of his 3rd consulship
Given by the Secretary of the Second Legion,
the prefect of the cavalry.

It appears to be some kind of stone dedicated to the Emperor Antoninus Pius who ruled from AD 138 to 161.

Many Thanks to Patrick the Latin scholar!

no. 4 (NO! I do not count as a Roman artifact, thank you very much)

the heart

I’m reading a book which talks about our need to seek God to change our hearts. I am struck by this truth… from the heart comes the words of the mouth…

Honest with God

I think when we are honest with God and with each other, the enemy hates it. I think this because honesty doesn’t hide stuff and when I am not hiding things from God, my wife, my friends, I am being real with them. I think this is what God wants: honesty. The enemy wants our pride to cause us to hide stuff from God and each other.

Thanks Pastor Bill for preaching on this. Thanks Pastor Laci for blogging about it.
