another film idea

last night sweet Anna and I went to get a slice of pizza and see a movie… we saw “Brideshead Revisited”  which I will see again just for the scenes around Oxford… … I found this far easier to sit through than the BBC series from 20 some years ago… in fact I found this to be compelling… it would be a great film for people to discuss… topics including: the oppression of some people’s religion, homosexuality, freedom in faith, the oppression of non-belief, friendship, betrayal, the purpose of life…

fav quote: (something like this) “happiness here is irrelevant, it is the hereafter that we have to focus on”

most thoughtful scene: Ryder’s temptation to snuff out the candle in the chapel – this is a simple scene with a deep meaning…

interesting thing: the similarity of Matthew Goode’s voice tone and accent to Jeremy Irons (who played Ryder in the 1981 BBC marathon edition…

recommendation? well, if you want shoot em up and train/bus chases, comedy and mindless dialogue to entertain you, forget it… BUT, if you want something to think about with scenery to relish? go see it… then talk about it with someone… But… CAUTION: it is rated R with good reason, consider yourself warned.

Number 17

I watched an old Hitchcock film today, “Number 17”, from 1932(?), made and shown in the UK… it was really interesting to see the way they used camera angles and lighting… and there was this great train/bus race to a ferry… the train runs out of control and crashes into the ferry… they used models to show the carriages of the train falling into the water when the ferry broke loose and slipped out to sea… I wondered what the reaction of the patrons in the theater was to the special effects back then?? Today a typical action movie fan would laugh, but back then they were not used to the kind of special effects we are used to today… as time goes by, we expect the special effects to be more and more realistic and we look back (even 10 or 20 years) and scoff… that which we get used to replaces that which came before… but is slicker, faster, more realistic really better? I am not so sure…

learning about rest

rest – it’s important… try it…

the results are spiritual, mental and physical… yes, it’s hard to do for some of us… and it’s hard work to get ready for it… but it is important… rest… maybe some of us need to get to the point where we must have it… but, find it… it’s important, why?

“Be still…

…and know that I am God”

until we are still, we don’t reach Him as we can in still-ness

rest, it’s important.

I sat straight up

I was channel surfing the other night (did you know cable watchers – I am not – can watch Law and Order about 10 times every day? and Star Trek at least 3?) ANYWAY, I stopped at the news and saw a picture of Radovan Karadzic, I sat straight up… could it be? YES, he had been captured! The people of the Balkans again hold their breath… to understand more about the current situation surrounding this butcher of humans and the swirl of politics that is Serbia and the EU, read this opinion from The Economist, when there, other articles are linked, including this one CLICK HERE, which gives the reader a good basic history of the killer.
