rhythm

rhythm – I’ve discovered, this school year, how important it is to me in this season of my life… I have taught in a single room for most of my teaching career but this year I am a nomadic teacher… in one part of our building in the morning, then here to the teacher’s computer room for email and so forth (because I can’t access the wireless from the space where my desk is)… and then I’m up in another part of the building for an afternoon class and then back down and across to yet a third wing to teach my last class of the day… with all that, it took me a while to establish a rhythm for my day… for days I was trying to sign on to a laptop at my desk and then I would give up and come to the teacher’s room… but finally (after two weeks), I began to figure out the rhythm of my day and things became markedly better… now, after morning classes, I go straight to the workroom for computer time without even trying the Internet upstairs… now, I have a better understanding of what makes my day work better for me…

The life of following Jesus is kinda like that… SO MANY of us are still figuring out a rhythm of connecting to the Lord that we are out of sync with Him and maybe, just maybe, we don’t know it… see, many humans (all humans?) are pretty inclined toward habit… I’m convinced that rhythm makes habit… Scazero, in Emotionally Healthy Spirituality* recommends the observance of the offices of the day: in my life it means to pause at given times every day and contemplate God… through the Shema, the Decalogue, a prayer… just to stop, to pause several times daily at given moments and reconnect to God through a word is an amazing way to develop spiritual rhythm in life…

What are the Spiritual Rhythms in your life that help you stay connected to God?

* I’ve just realized that I’ve almost not mentioned this book before! I am amazed.
